Catnip oil has been found to be ten times more effective than DEET in repelling insects.
According to Dr Mercola:
Catnip oil was shown to be more effective in repelling mosquitoes compared to DEET, the most common ingredient in pesticides and insect repellents
This essential oil was also shown to be able to combat cockroaches, termites, dust mites, and deer ticks. The only setback about catnip oil is that it has a short shelf life.
An effective oil blend I recommend if you are unable to source the catnip: Terra Shield This product contains lemon balm and catnip, along with other repellant oils.
Mosquito repellent recipe:
10 drops each lemon eucalyptus, lemongrass and catnip oil
2-ounce carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil is a good one but there are many good oils)
Place in a glass container, rollerball or spray-mix by inverting several times- Store out of heat and light . Use on exposed skin, or on clothing if sensitive to oils.
How to use: Apply to exposed skin.Avoid using directly on skin without a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oils. Also, avoid using directly on very small children and pregnant women’s skin. Instead, spray clothing and use in a diffuser. Apply every 1.5-2 hours
